Nasal Septal Perforations - An Occupational Hazard in Chrome Industry Workers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Persons working in nickel refineries, arsenic smelters and chrome plating factories are exposed to chromium compounds. Hexavalent chromium has been implicated for its toxic effects on the nasal mucosa. Detailed data of 108 workers, dealing in manufacturing of Chrome and its compounds, was collected concerning age, occupational history and clinical examination. Of the 108 cases, 52 cases had nasal and conjunctival irritation and 19 patients suffered from anosmia. All the workers had perforations involving anterior and middle portion of cartilaginous septum. However, no destruction of bony septum was observed. The current study concludes that ENT surgeons must enquire about the occupation of the patient in cases of septal perforations.

Lung cancer risk in the electroplating industry in Lombardy, Italy, using the Italian occupational cancer monitoring (OCCAM) information system.
BACKGROUND Occupational Cancer Monitoring (OCCAM) is an Italian organization that monitors occupational cancers, by area and industrial sector, by retrieving cases and employment history from official databases. OCCAM previously estimated a relative risk (RR) of lung cancer of about 1.32 among "metal treatment" workers in Lombardy, northern Italy, potentially exposed to chrome and nickel. In th...

OBJECTIVES In this study, a modified surgical method was carried out to repair large nasal septal perforations with a galeal pericranial flap using endoscopic technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS Six adult human cadavers were dissected by applying the classic open rhinoplasty technique. Large perforations were created in the septal cartilages. To repair the perforations, we prepared galeal pericr...

OBJECTIVES Nasal septal perforation is an anatomic defect of the cartilaginous and bone tissues of the nasal septum. Many approaches and techniques to repair nasal septal perforations have been reported on. The purpose of this paper is to report on our surgical technique and the results of the treatment for nasal septal perforations. METHODS From May 2001 to March 2008, 14 patients (12 males ...
متن کاملOccupational skin ulceration in chrome platers.
Ulceration of the skin due to contact with hexavalent chromium was first described by Cummings in 1827. One hundred years later, in 1928, Blair published a study of 12 cases of skin and nasal ulceration at a time when chrome plating had become commercially successful. Formal regulations to protect workers heath were introduced for the first time in the UK in 1931, when the risks of occupational...
متن کاملElevated Frequencies of Micronuclei and other Nuclear Abnormalities of Chrome Plating Workers Occupationally Exposed to Hexavalent Chromium
BACKGROUND Biomonitoring provides a useful tool to estimate the genetic risk from exposure to genotoxic agents. The aim of this study was to assess the potential cytogenetic damage associated with occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium by using micronuclei (MN) as a biomarker. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study and all participants were males. Both the exposed and control individu...
